Toei Animation publicly announced on May 9, also known as ‘Goku day’ in the anime culture, that it is working on a Dragon Ball Super anime film for a 2022 release.

On May 7, the official Toei Animation Europe Website inadvertently leaked the announcement in a post that was supposed to be released on May 9. The article’s headline reads, “Toei Animation Marks Goku Day with Surprise Announcement of New Dragon Ball Super Movie in 2022.” The announcement was made public on May 9 as scheduled.

Akira Toriyama, the original author, is in charge of the script and character design. He shared the following message to the fans –
An all new movie since “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” is currently in the making!
Just like the previous movie, I’m heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film.
I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character.
We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!

The film will be the 21st instalment of the Dragon Ball film series. The planning for this film began before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Brolly in 2018. Toriyama is also writing the dialogues for the film, in addition to plot and character creation.

In Japan, the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film premiered in December 2018. The film grossed over US$120 million worldwide. Akira Toriyama, the author of Dragon Ball, wrote the script and designed the characters. Tatsuya Nagamine directed the film. Naohiro Shintani was the animation director and Kazuo Ogura was the art director. The music was composed by Norihito Sumitomo.

The Dragon Ball Super TV anime series debuted in July 2015 and lasted 131 episodes before ending in March 2018. The series is available on Crunchyroll.
