Shunsuke Kikuchi composer of Dragon Ball, Doraemon, Kamen Rider died of aspiration pneumonia on April 24. He was 89 years old at the time. The announcement came from The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors of Music (JASRAC). His funeral was held in his family’s home. Kikuchi has been out of the spotlight since 2017, when he announced that he was taking a break to recover from an illness.
Kikuchi was born in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, on November 1, 1931. He made his professional debut as a soundtrack composer in the 1961 film The Eighth Enemy, after graduating from Nihon University College of Art (Hachininme no Teki).
Shunsuke Kikuchi composed “Doraemon no Uta” the Doraemon anime’s theme song in 1979, which aired on TV for 26 years.
He is perhaps better known for his work on the Kamen Rider franchise’s first theme song, “Let’s Go!! Rider Kick,” as well as Tiger Mask, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dr. Slump, Getter Robo, Casshan, Tōshō Daimos, Grendizer, among several others.
He has earned several awards for his contributions to the industry. At the 2013 Tokyo Anime Awards, he got a Merit Award. At the 57th Japan Record Awards in 2015, he was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
