Dragon Quest XII - The Flames of Fate

On Thursday, Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 35th anniversary live stream announced that the company is working on Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate (Dragon Quest XII: Erabareshi Unmei no Honoo). This is the newest major game entry in the company’s long-running Dragon Quest role-playing game series.

Series creator Yuji Horii labelled it as “darker” than previous iterations and a “Dragon Quest” for grownups. The trailer narrates “why do people live?” followed by the title reveal.

Horii also hinted that the series’ usual menu-based fighting system could undergo some modifications. Square Enix is planning for a global release but did not specify a date or platform.

Square Enix also announced five more new Dragon Quest titles during the broadcast.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age was released in Japan in July 2017 for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. The Switch version of the game was released in September 2019. In December 2020, the game was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.

Yuji Horii created the Dragon Quest role-playing video game franchise. Square Enix publishes the games. There are eleven main-series games and numerous spin-off games since the first game was released in 1986. Furthermore, various manga, anime, and books have been released under the franchise, with practically every game in the main series having a corresponding adaptation.
