Golgo 13 manga

Golgo 13 manga broke the Guinness World Record for “most volumes released for a single manga series” with its 201st tankōbon volume. The volume was published in Japan on Monday. The manga is written by Takao Saito and it began publication in Shogakukan’s Big Comic magazine in 1968.

Golgo 13 manga dethroned the previous record-holder, Osamu Akimoto’s Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo (Kochikame) manga. Kochikame set the record in September 2016, when the 200th and final tankōbon volume was released.

The manga revolves around the titular renowned hitman, whose age and origin are unknown, and none of the world’s intelligence agencies know his real identity. The majority of his work is completed with a modified, scoped M16 rifle.

Between 2006 and 2008, Viz Media released 13 volumes of the manga in North America. The company describes the 1st volume as:
In 1991, UN inspectors found the incomplete Project Babylon–a cannon capable of hurling a shell 600 miles. In 1995, the Clinton administration learns of a second, hidden Iraqi supergun–now operational, and with a much, much longer range… There are only two options to destroy the supergun: send in an airstrike–or send in Golgo 13! Then, flash back to 1979 on the streets of San Francisco, where a hit-and-run accident intersects with a mob boss’s terror that he is G13’s next target… Plus excerpts from the File 13 dossier revealing the secrets of his personal data, false identities, alias, and more!

Golgo 13 manga inspired the following adaptations:
1. Golgo 13 (1973 live-action)
2. Assignment Kowloon (1977 live-action)
3. The Professional (1983 anime film)
4. Top Secret Episode (1988 video game NES)
5. The Mafat Conspiracy (1990 video game NES)
6. Golgo 13: Queen Bee (OVA)
7. Golgo 13 (50-episode Anime series 2008-2009)

On July 17, the manga will receive its first spinoff manga in the form of a bonus issue for Big Comic Zōkan.
