Kobayashi has been fighting kidney cancer for the past two years, according to his Twitter post. The post said, “I regret that I still had more things I wanted to do and work I wanted to create. I’m sure I’ll be reborn and make a good work!”.

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, Paradise Kiss, End of the World, Digital Juice, and Ani-Kuri 15 are among the anime directed by Kobayashi. He directed episodes for Naruto Shippuuden, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Dororo, and Lupin III: Part IV.

Mitsuo Iso also posted about Kobayashi’s death on Twitter. Iso said, “Osamu Kobayashi has passed away. He was a benefactor who was very helpful during the difficult times and he told me that it is good to draw the picture you want to draw and make the story you want to make without worrying about people’s evaluation. He was like a crystal of the creator’s soul. Please draw as many pictures as you want even at that time. I pray for your soul.”

Osamu Kobayashi (January 10, 1964 – April 16, 2021) was a Japanese animator, illustrator, mechanical artist, and animation director. He was best known for BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad and Paradise Kiss. He worked as a designer and manga artist after graduating from high school, but in recent years, he was primarily involved in the field of animation.
