The Misfit of Demon King Academy

The Misfit of Demon King Academy manga series has been cancelled due to author’s illness. The announcement came from the official Twitter account for Square Enix’s Manga Up! website on Wednesday. Author Kaya Haruka is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

The manga is adapted from Shu’s The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants (Maō Gakuin no Futekigōsha ~Shijō Saikyō no Maō no Shiso, Tensei Shite Shison-tachi no Gakkō e Kayō) light novel series.

In a statement posted above, Kaya Haruka mentions that they were aware of the cancer since September 2019. Kaya Haruka remarked that while they regret that the manga had to end in this manner, they will cherish the time they spent working on it.

Synopsis

Square Enix is publishing the manga in English, and it describes the story:
Despite their appetite for destruction, even demon kings tire of all the blood and chaos sometimes! When Anoth reincarnates in the hopes of a more peaceful life, he ends up going to school with his descendants in his old castle 2,000 years later. But with magic on its last legs in this era, no one is able to assess Anoth’s true power!

Manga

From July 2018, a manga adaptation with art by Kaya Haruka was serialised online on Square Enix’s Manga UP! website. 4 volumes have been released as of March 5, 2021.

Light Novel

Shu launched the novel as an amateur web novel in April 2017 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The novel was later acquired by ASCII Media Works which officially began to publish it in Dengeki Bunko imprint from March 2018. Yoshinori Shizuma did the illustrations for the light novel. As of April 9, 2021, 9 volumes have been released with the 10th volume slated for August 6, 2021.

Anime

On October 6, 2019, an anime television series adaption was revealed at the “Dengeki Bunko Aki no Namahōsō Festival”. The anime was supposed to launch in April 2020, but it was pushed back to July 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. A 13-episode anime series aired from July 4, 2020 and concluded in September 26, 2020. Shin Oonuma (Chief Director) and Masafumi Tamura (Director) directed the show at Studio Silver Link.

On March 6, 2021, it was announced that the series will return for a second split-cour season, with the cast and staff returning for their respective roles.
