Made in Abyss Live-Action Film Green-Lit, Kevin McMullin to Direct

According to Deadline, Sony’s Columbia Pictures has commissioned writer and director Kevin McMullin to write Made in Abyss Live-Action feature film script based on Akihito Tsukushi’s dark fantasy adventure manga Made in Abyss.

Made in Abyss Live-Action is being produced by Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment and Masi Oka of Mobius Productions. The producers previously worked together on the 2017 Death Note film and the live-action The Promised Neverland series which is currently under development at Amazon.

Kevin McMullin is a producer and director who has worked on films such as First Prize (2014), Low Tide (2019), and Party of Special Things to Do (2014)

Synopsis

The only unexplored area on the planet is an immense pit and cave system known as the “Abyss.” Strange and fantastic animals inhabit its depths, and it is brimming with precious relics that modern humans are unable to create. Humans are drawn to the secrets of the Abyss, and they set out to discover them. “Cave Raiders” are explorers who venture into the pit. Rico, a little orphan girl, lives in the town of Ōrth on the outskirts of the Abyss. Her ambition is to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a Cave Raider, solving the secrets of the cave system. Rico begins exploring the caves one day and finds a robot that resembles a human child.

Made In Abyss Live-Action

Anime

In July 2017, a 13-episode television anime series based on the manga was released in Japan. The franchise has three movies. Made in Abyss: Tabidachi no Yoake (Journey’s Dawn), a compilation film, was released in Japan in January 2019. Second movie titled Made in Abyss: Hōrō Suru Tasogare (Wandering Twilight), also a compilation film, was released two weeks later.

Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul is the third movie of the franchise which is the direct sequel of the first season of TV anime. It was release in Japan in January 2020.

On May 5, 2021, the official website for Akihito Tsukushi’s Made in Abyss anime announced that the anime will have a second television season in 2022 named Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō (The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City).

Game

Spike Chunsoft is now working on a new 3D action RPG named Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness for the franchise (Yami o Mezashita Rensei). Tsukushi will oversee the game’s fully voiced original plot, which will be released in both English and Japanese in 2022 for the PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC (via Steam). In Europe, Numskull Games is selling a physical version.
